Komutr:

Turning an ultra-slim MagSafe earbud concept into a manufacturable product.

Komutr was developed around a simple but compelling idea:
Make earbuds easier to carry, harder to lose, and more natural to use every day by attaching the charging case directly to the phone.

Ultra-slim

Compact form factor designed around everyday mobility.

MagSafe

Case attaches directly to the back of the phone.

Story 1

Project overview

A category rethink for wireless earbuds

Standard earbuds are small, easy to misplace, and often live at the bottom of a bag or pocket. Komutr rethinks that experience by integrating a slim magnetic case that stays attached to the smartphone, keeping the product visible, accessible, and ready to use.

earbuds

Product type

MagSafe wireless earbuds for daily commuting and mobile use.

Main user benefit

Better accessibility and lower risk of losing the earbuds.

Core design challenge

Combine slimness, usability, electronics, and manufacturability.

Agilian Scope

Product development support from feasibility and prototyping to production preparation.

The challenge

Making a very thin, highly portable
product work in the real world

The idea was clear, but the execution involved multiple engineering and manufacturing constraints. The product had to remain slim and elegant while still delivering the expected performance, robustness, and day-to-day usability of a premium wireless audio device.
01

Ultra-thin
 architecture

Internal space was extremely limited, which increased pressure on component selection, stacking, battery allocation,
and mechanical layout.
02

Magnetic
integration

The case needed to attach cleanly and reliably to the phone without compromising the product form, handling, or internal structure.
03

Audio and ANC constraints

Delivering expected listening performance and active noise cancellation inside such a compact volume required careful validation and iteration.
04

Durability
and assembly

The product still had to survive repeated everyday use and remain practical to assemble consistently at production scale.

The challenge

From concept feasibility to production readiness

Feasibility, prototyping, and EVT

Early work focused on validating whether the slim magnetic concept could realistically support the intended user experience and hardware requirements.

Redesign and performance optimization

Following initial development exposure, the product moved into refinement, including design updates, packaging of internal architecture, and tuning of ANC-related performance.

Validation, certification,
and pre-production

The team then worked toward proving readiness through validation activity, certification support, and preparation for more stable production conditions.

Engineering focus

Key areas where development effort mattered most

01

Electronics
 platform validation

Platform and chipset choices had to support the product’s size targets while still enabling the intended feature set.
02

Iterative
prototyping

The case needed to attach cleanly and reliably to the phone without compromising the product form, handling, or internal structure.

03

Tooling &
design refinement

Delivering expected listening performance and active noise cancellation inside such a compact volume required careful validation and iteration.

04

Assembly
 process refinement

The product had to move beyond a good concept and become something that could be assembled repeatably with reliable quality.

Design intent

A product story built around mobility, access, and habit

Komutr was shaped around the idea that earbuds should stay closer to the user, not buried in a pocket or bag until needed.

The concept focused on making the product feel naturally integrated into everyday routines, especially in moments of movement, transition, and mobility.

Keeping the case attached to the phone helped reinforce accessibility while also giving the product a more distinctive and memorable presence.

From a design perspective, the goal was to balance this lifestyle-oriented vision with the practical constraints of audio hardware integration and manufacturable form development.

Rather than functioning as a conventional accessory, the case was designed to become part of the user’s everyday carry — visible, accessible, and ready when needed.

Rather than focusing on sensitive production metrics, this case study is stronger when it shows the product challenge, the logic of the development work, and how the concept was carried toward a production-ready outcome.

Outcome

A differentiated product prepared for launch

The result is a unique wireless earbud product that combines a slim magnetic storage concept with a more lifestyle-oriented use story.

A

Clear product differentiation

Komutr stands out through its MagSafe attachment concept and highly portable charging case format.
B

Improved everyday accessibility

The case needed to attach cleanly and reliably to the phone without compromising the product form, handling, or internal structure.

C

Validated path to industrialization

The project narrative shows a credible route from concept, through prototyping, into validation and pre-production readiness.
04

Strong marketing story

The product had to move beyond a good concept and become something that could be assembled repeatably with reliable quality.
