In-mold degating is a process we use in-house for plastic injection molding to automate the removal of sprues and runners during production, enhancing efficiency.

We implement this method wherever possible because it eliminates secondary operations, ensures precision, and reduces production time and costs. By integrating degating directly into the mold, we minimize waste and consistently achieve high-quality results.

The In-Mold Degating Process

The in-mold degating process is a step-by-step operation. Here’s how it works:

  • Close the mold
    The injection molding machine securely closes the mold, creating a sealed cavity for the polymer.
  • Inject the polymer into the mold
    Molten polymer is injected into the mold cavity under high pressure, filling it completely.
  • Hold the pressure for a short time
    Pressure is maintained to ensure the polymer fills every detail of the mold and compensates for material shrinkage.
  • Blades come out and cut the sprue
    Embedded blades in the mold cut the sprue automatically while the polymer is still molten at the start of the cooling phase.
  • Cooling of polymer in the mold
    The polymer solidifies as it cools, taking on the shape of the mold.
  • Mold opens and parts are ejected
    The finished parts are ejected from the mold, ready for inspection and packaging.
